I’m playing with Will Rogers now. Having fun with oil on MDF board. This is a large 16 x 22 inch. I’m not really liking the big size just for play.

After Mixer
I practiced a horse, using the ideal Quarter Horse that was painted by Orren Mixer. The American Quarter Horse Association commissioned it. Six other breed associations also commissioned him to paint their ideal horse breed! Ideal, as in the perfect conformation for that breed. This is oil over acrylic.
Mark Twain
This is oil on board and it is supposed to be Mark Twain. The photo is too dark – seriously, the painting is not that dark. I was still experimenting with diox purple. There’s the earth red from Rublev, some orange…no more than a trace of anything else.
Dirty painting
This is quick and dirty. I was very relaxed!
Attempt Juan de Pareja
This is my first attempt at Juan de Pareja, the famous painting by Velázquez. Believe it or not, this dignified person was the slave of Velázquez, became the head of the painting workshop and eventually learned to paint himself. Eventually, de Pareja became a well-known painter in his own right and subsequently Velázquez freed him.… Continue reading Attempt Juan de Pareja
Not Rembrandt
Yep, I’ve been playing with a Rembrandt self-portrait. What an amazing painter he was. One stroke of paint created a shadow, a contour, an impression of padded skin or a hollow. One stroke of my paint usually looks like a dab of paint. But on to the pigments: I’ve been mixing Rublev’s Blue Ridge Yellow… Continue reading Not Rembrandt
I Started Again
More than a year after the death of my husband, I’ve started painting again. Right now, I’m back to oils, watercolor and oil paper. Here are some practice pieces – I gave up on the one I was doing on Arches. Um, I think if I use thick paint on Arches, I could do better.
Spanish site
I started another wordpress.com site just to force myself to write more in Spanish while I’m learning. It’s https://hastacintia.wordpress.com. I started a painting of a horse….here’s the drawing I made but every time I start to paint, I’m interrupted. I mean, really no exception! I can stand interruptions at any other time, but not while… Continue reading Spanish site
Study binge
I’ve been having a study binge. I haven’t had time to paint, because during my free time I’ve studied – for the umpteenth time por la enesima vez – Spanish again. If you know me, you know I’m a chronic Spanish quitter. I’ve always quit, mainly because I can’t hear other languages, even when I… Continue reading Study binge
Loosely painted horse
I like loose paintings with expressive strokes, but usually I’m too uptight a person to successfully leave a painting like that. I overwork. But I’ve been gardening and hammering – outside work. So, my drawing hand is tired. I took advantage of it. 🙂 Nice and loose work! Yep, this is digital. I used digital… Continue reading Loosely painted horse
