Abandoned Portrait

I was using the 12-set of Derwent LIghtfast colored pencils to draw a portrait, but the paper has uneven texture and various other problems. It’s Fabriano Artistico hot press!!! Maybe it’s counterfeit? That used to be my favorite paper. Well, I’ve waited on myself for weeks to get back to it and I won’t. So… Continue reading Abandoned Portrait

Got Derwent Lightfast

So I bought a 12-pack of Derwent Lightfast pencils as a last try for lightfast colored pencils (well, I haven’t tried Caran D’Ache).I’ve already got them in a window for a lightfast test. Here they are on cold press paper. I thought I’d fill in the texture with watercolor washes, and did that on the first… Continue reading Got Derwent Lightfast

14-week ducklings

Here’s the chocolate drakelet and his two Khaki females. They still only have half their pen, because: I tried to combine them, but it didn’t go well, with some pulling of feathers. I’ll get some more fencing.

Dog painting

This is halfway through an egg tempera painting of my granddaughter’s dog. And yes, that red is an earth. Luberon red ochre and the green earth is Tavush. I can’t show the finished painting, because I coated it with gloss varnish, which overcomes my camera.

12-week ducklings and new chicks

This post is image-heavy. The Campbell ducklings are now 12 weeks old. They’ve got company. Someone is moving and had to rehome 5 chicks. 3 Barred Rock and apparently, 2 Sicilian Buttercup! Here’s a closeup of one buttercup, and under that pic, a look at the unusual double helping of a single comb?

Ducks10and11

Here are the remaning ducklings at 10 weeks. I butchered one of the excess drakelets and I’m still sad about it, so the other 2 extra drakes are still here. And in the picture below that one, there are changes to the pen. In this pic, the duckling are 11 weeks. The ground was staying… Continue reading Ducks10and11

New Pigments

I’m not happy with my lighfastness tests for colored pencils, so I bought a few more pigments to paint with. And dug up some orange clay! I ground the orange clay for a long time and also mulled it. I suppose I might need to levigate it carefully, to get out any sand. The reds… Continue reading New Pigments

Ducks 9-weeks

The non-standard (I don’t know what it is) is standing in the center. The rest do look like Khaki Campbells. I’m going to give them 6 more days to start quacking, before I decide which are male and which are female.

8week Ducklings

The ducklings are 8 weeks old today and only 2 of them quack. The 4 non-quackers must be males/drakes. I’ll wait another week or two, to make sure their quacking ability isn’t just delayed. 😕 Here are pics, including a closeup of the chocolate non-standard khaki. He looks like a dark Campbell? Note the question… Continue reading 8week Ducklings

More lightfastness testing

I have my swatches in a window with only a few hours of sun a day. This is early spring, so weak sunshine. Because of that, I am shocked at these results: Beige is gone, peach is beige, carmine and ultramarine are phantoms. Phthalo is faded, the yellows, I don’t know about the brown, maybe… Continue reading More lightfastness testing
